Starma

James Sta-Maria aka DJ Starma Llama DJ/MC/Beatbox Technician/AcroYoga Instructor

From the age of 15 Starma discovered music production which quickly led to picking up some records and learning to beat match. Before leaving high school Starma had already made a name for himself amongst his peers as being the school DJ. This eventually turned into a mobile DJ business and by the time he graduated high school was DJing the school socials and formals. After being formally trained as a wedding DJ and MC, Starma began making his name as a mobile DJ across Perth’s wedding scene. This eventually led to residencies and guest appearances across clubs in Perth.

Travelling across to Melbourne for 8 years, Starma delved into the street art scene playing pop up parties in warehouses and alleyways. Forming a band called Hesteria with a friend producing Drum and Bass, Drum Step, Electro House, Deep House and techno.

A Beatboxing Llama

During this time Starma discovered Beatboxing as a means to take ideas from your mind and quickly bring them to life. After building the basic skillsets of a beatboxer, Starma started adding audio effects and dynamics to his vocals to build on his sound. This led into live-looping through a Kaoss Pad which both added FX and looped his voice to create songs impulsively and on the fly.

In 2014, Starma decided to travel the world and DJ in as many pubs, clubs and hostels as he could manage. The tour was capped off with DJing at Burning Man in Nevada, USA.  Starma’s versatile musical tastes were well received as he took punters on a journey through sound traversing Hip Hop, Funk, Break-Beat, House, Breaks, Deep House, Techno and Drum & Bass.
